Happy Friday!
I hope you have had a wonderful, fulfilling week. Recently I have been thinking about the magic of quilts (Yes, they are magical!), and for me, the texture is really what excites me. I am quite a tactile person…food textures are important to me, I always want to touch things and experience the feel of an item. Luckily for me, my job is a plethora of textures that I get to experience and create.
I recently put a quilt that I hand quilted onto my bed, and this quilt also has embroidery and embellishments. The back is a lovely floral flannel (I know right…when do you see a floral flannel?) that is so soft and full of whimsy. The quilt brings me joy each time I walk past it, and I adore sleeping under it!
I think T-Shirt and Memory quilts are just as magical, too. The inherent weight of a T-Shirt quilt makes it already cuddly, and t-shirt fabric has its own squishy, soft texture. Plus, as you know, I enjoy adding in all the bits that make those quilts special. Pockets that can hold tissues when someone is ill or pass along sweet little love notes. Buttons and placards that are tactile and lovely. (I know I have mentioned my button bowl in the studio…)The memories seem embedded in the very fiber of the quilts, too.
Everyday, I get to explore textures as I quilt…I love to run my hands along the fabric and over the quilted area and as I sew, cut, and fold. I also love to feel the hot fabric as I press a piece. I love the textures of sewing thread, quilting thread, embroidery floss, pearl cotton, and yarn.
I hope you get to explore texture in your world and can find interest, curiosity, and comfort there.
Have a wonderful week,
Ginger
Reading Now: I devoured the last Chief Inspector Gamache novel, and I am sad now. I have to find the next one, but I am going to take a break. I have an Agatha Christie compilation I procured in my second hand book excursions recently that might be a nice diversion. I still love Samuel Hamilton, and Lee in East of Eden. Cathy…well Cathy is Cathy. I am still enjoying the critical text about the Romantic poets; I am learning so much, and unfortunately seeing a lot of parallels to our current culture in terms of race relations.
